The story
“May you be covered in the dust of your Rabbi.”
I got to make this shirt for my pastor, Jon, at Citypoint Church in Tempe. It’s a reminder of our church’s mission statement: Walking the way of Jesus. Doing the works of Jesus. It went over well, and they encouraged me to put it on the site, so here it is.
Jon told me Matthew 4:19 was a big part of where that mission statement came from: “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men” (Matthew 4:19, ESV). When Jesus said it, Peter and Andrew left their nets and followed Him on the spot (Matthew 4:20).
That opening line isn’t a Bible verse. It comes from an old Jewish saying that tells students to cover themselves in the dust of their teachers’ feet (Mishnah, Avot 1:4). Some read that as sitting at a rabbi’s feet to learn, others as walking so close behind him that his dust lands on you. Either way, the Bible makes the same point: a disciple stays close to his teacher and becomes like him (Luke 6:40).
That’s my prayer for anyone who wears it: to walk the way Jesus walked (1 John 2:6).
